NEWS RELEASE
Breastfeeding mums no longer have to sacrifice style or fashion thanks to an exclusive new range of contemporary nursing wear.
Nuvo Maternity has launched its first winter collection of fashion breastfeeding tops – the latest maternity trend that is fast gaining popularity in Australia.
According to Nuvo Maternity’s owner, Ms Kelly Gough, today’s generation of mothers are fashion savvy and expect to breastfeed in public and look good at the same time.
“Mums are no longer happy to stay at home. Today’s mother wants to have coffee with other mums and our nursing wear allows her to breastfeed her baby discreetly and in style,” Ms Gough said.
New Mum, Mrs Lindy Tews said she struggled to find fashionable yet practical clothing to breastfeed her son in before discovering the Nuvo range.
“I didn’t want to wear frumpy button-up tops that screamed breastfeeding! These new designs look like regular fashion, so none of my friends can tell I’m wearing a breastfeeding top,” she said.
Celebrities have revolutionised maternity wear in the past decade with a baby bump the latest accessory in Hollywood. Nursing wear is set to follow the same path with new celebrity mums such as Nicole Ritchie, Naomi Watts and Christina Aguilera breastfeeding their babies.
“With breastfeeding rates increasing, Australian mothers are embracing breastfeeding fashion following on from the trend seen in overseas countries such as America,” Ms Gough said.
Nuvo Maternity is the brainchild of Brisbane mother of two, Kelly Gough. After endlessly searching in Australia for practical nursing wear that was also stylish and comfortable, Ms Gough was disappointed with the lack of products available. While on maternity leave with her second child, she set about to fill the niche herself.

Planning your winter breastfeeding wardrobe
|
Date Added: 4/5/2008
|
|
Now the cooler weather is upon us, it's time to start thinking about your winter breastfeeding wardrobe. With some clever planning your breastfeeding clothes will take you right through winter and beyond with ease. A few easy tips will help you put together a stylish kit without breaking the budget.
Stay Warm – breastfeeding tops really do make a difference and keep your back and belly warm during winter. No more exposed skin - brrrr! The difference from regular clothes, is that breasfeeding clothing is designed to keep you covered while giving you quick and easy access for feeding. It really does makes breastfeeding more comfortable in cooler weather.
Great Lengths – choose a selection of sleeve lengths so your breastfeeding tops will take you through all seasons, giving you much better value for money. T-shirts, and ¾ sleeves are great under a jacket for winter and perfect on their own for spring and summer. Creating a versatile fashion kit will mean you have something to wear all year round.
Layer Up - add a Bravado nursing tank and layer up under jackets, cardigans and winter PJs. A great bra replacement for sleeping and an old-favourite to keep you warm during those cold night time feeds.
Grab a hoodie - a winter must-have and one of the leading trends for winter. Our Funky Nursing Hoodie is a comfortable casual basic that will take you from home, walking and to mother’s group with ease long after you finish breastfeeding.
Get Stripey - not stroppy that is from the cold and a hungry baby! Stripes are another big influence this winter, so be sure to add them to your wardrobe including accessories such as scarves or beanies. Black, red and grey are hot colours this winter so look for stripes in these colours such as our Sarah Striped polo.
Classic Style – choose tops that you can still wear long after you finish breastfeeding. By selecting designs with discreetly hidden openings no one will know you are wearing a breastfeeding top. Stretch your dollar just that little bit further with classic designs that will become wardrobe favourites for years to come.
Remember that just because you’re breastfeeding, it doesn’t mean that you have to sacrifice your sense of style! With fashion breastfeeding tops you can still take your baby out with friends for coffee and discreetly feed in public. Best of all, it does wonders for your self-esteem when you have something nice and new to wear.

The Latest Nursing Wear Trends
|
Date Added: 31/3/2008
|
|
With our new season Nuvo designs arriving throughout April, it got me thinking about the latest trends in nursing wear and breastfeeding clothes. With more celebrities raising the profile of breastfeeding, nursing wear is the hottest new trend in maternity fashion.
Here’s my tips on the leading trends in nursing wear.
1. Fashion Breastfeeding tops - Nursing tanks will always be staples in any breastfeeding mums wardrobe, but now the big move is towards breastfeeding tops that embrace the latest fashion trends. This is due to more mums breastfeeding out and about in public and wanting to look good too!
2. Innovative new openings - Look out for better disguised and discreet nursing openings built into breastfeeding tops. No longer is the horizontal opening the way to go. Mums are looking for tops that don’t look like they are made for breastfeeding!
3. Natural Fabrics - The big trend is towards high quality and natural fibres such as Cotton. These fabrics breathe, feel soft and last the distance, as well as being environmentally-friendly.
4. Wardrobe Essentials - Modern nursing wear is now designed to become a part of your wardrobe long after you finish breastfeeding. With quality fabrics, cut and design, breastfeeding clothing will easily combine into your exisiting wardrobe, without anyone guessing they are made for nursing.
5. Maternity Sleepwear -Gone are the frumpy, oversized button-up nighties that your mother wore! Nursing sleepwear has undergone a transformation with sexy styles that making breastfeeding a breeze. Think wrap fronts, stretchy fabrics and drop-cup designs to help you feel like a goddess in the bedroom.

How does Nursing Wear work?
|
Date Added: 4/3/2008
|
|
Nuvo Maternity’s nursing wear has cleverly designed nursing openings to help you breastfeed your baby quickly, easily and discreetly in public. Different nursing openings are used to suit the style and fabric of each garment. Read our quick, easy guide to nursing openings to help you choose the best breastfeeding top for you.
Double Sided Nursing Openings

To nurse, simply lift the top layer of the top to access generous nursing openings in the bottom layer underneath. Two nursing openings are located on both sides of the garment. You wear your own nursing bra underneath to provide the level of breast support you require.
Empire Nursing Openings

Empire nursing openings are often used in tops that use a crossover or wrap front. Horizontal openings are built into a privacy layer beneath the wrap front of the garment. To breastfeed, push aside wrap front and lift up inner layer to access the nursing openings. You wear your own nursing bra underneath to provide the level of breast support you require.
Drop Cup Openings
This style of nursing opening is most commonly used in nursing tank and nursing bra designs. To breastfeed simply undo the nursing bra clips to provide access for breastfeeding. Often nursing tanks include a built-in nursing bra for added support.
Wrap front sleepwear

Wrap style fronts are popular in sleepwear and loungewear. These designs provide easy breastfeeding access by simply pushing aside the wrap front to provide complete access for breastfeeding. This style of access is very easy for breastfeeding at night and while you are learning.
Tip : Using Nursing Wear
Drop the cup of your nursing bra first. While lifting your top, hold baby close to the breast to allow quick access to the breast through the hidden nursing openings. Once baby is attached, no one will know you’re breastfeeding! It will look like you are cuddling a sleeping baby. With a little practise you will find breastfeeding in public a breeze!

How to Breastfeed in Style!
|
Date Added: 3/10/2007
|
|
Breastfeeding no longer means sacrificing fashion just because you’re a nursing mum! With a celebrity baby boom and resurgence of breastfeeding, maternity designers have taken note and are now designing nursing wear just for breastfeeding. With a little planning and a few tips, you’ll be well on your way to breastfeeding in style.
Look at your needs
While pregnant plan ahead and look at your lifestyle to plan your breastfeeding clothes and nursing wear purchases before your baby is born. Are you sporty? Like to socialise? Returning to work? Then think about styles and colours to suit your lifestyle as you’ll be living in them for several months while breastfeeding.
Plan a nursing wear kit
Once you know your needs it’s a good idea to plan a nursing kit to get you through breastfeeding. Choose versatile colours that are easy to mix and match. As a basic guide you will need to include the following items to get you started:
- 2-3 good quality nursing bras
- 1 pair of PJs or nightie for night feeds
- 3 comfortable breastfeeding tops for everyday
- 1 dressy top or nursing dress for special outings
Quality Fabrics
Choose quality and easy-care fabrics that feel soft against the skin and will last frequent washing. The addition of spandex or lycra to a fabric will also help the garment adjust to your changing shape. Natural fibres are best for bras and sleepwear while soft jersey and cotton/spandex fabrics are great for tops and dresses.
Accessories for a unique look
Adding stylish accessories is a cheap and cheerful way to create a modern look. Funky necklaces, bangles and scarves will keep your look fresh and help create different outfits from your nursing wear basics. Don’t forget the must-have statement bag for all your baby needs!
Personal Grooming
Having a newborn baby means little time for high maintenance haircuts or skin care regimes. Ask your hairdresser for a stylish cut that is easy to care for and looks great with minimal fuss. Keep it simple and stick to the basics for effortless chic.
Breastfeed in style
Planning your breastfeeding wardrobe will help you to feel calm and confident when breastfeeding in public. Knowing you look good in fashionable clothing will do wonders for your self-esteem and leave you with one less thing to worry about at this exciting and hectic time in your life.

Tips for Making Breastfeeding Easier
|
Date Added: 17/7/2007
|
|
Breastfeeding a newborn can be a challenging experience at the best of times, let alone running a household, working and looking after older siblings at the same time. However, with a few tips and a little planning it can be a very rewarding experience for both you and your new baby. You will even get an excuse to put your feet up once in a while!
Plan Ahead
Think of what you need to achieve in a day and plan around your baby’s feeding and sleeping patterns. Babies are usually more settled in the morning after a good feed, so this may be the best time for you to attend to work that needs doing. The best thing about a baby is that you can usually do things while your baby sleeps or have them near you on a play mat or rocker.
Be Realistic
When breastfeeding a new baby be realistic about what you can achieve and try not to plan too much in the first few months of your baby’s life. Stick to the essentials and live by the to-do list. This will help you to focus on what needs to be done – a must for the sleep deprived brain! Once feeding is established you will feel more confident to take on more.
Buy a pump and express
If you need to spend time away from your baby for work matters it is worth investing in a quality breast pump so you can express breast milk for your baby. Your partner or carer can then give the expressed breast milk in a bottle to feed your baby while you are away. Start freezing and storing your expressed milk so you have a good supply built up when the need arises.
Look after yourself
It is important to eat healthy and nutritious meals while breastfeeding, so have a cook up and freeze easy to prepare meals before your baby arrives. Casseroles, soups and lasagnes are good examples and simply add some crusty bread and salad for a healthy meal. Make sure you drink lots of water to keep your fluids up as well.
Ask for help
Don’t try to be superwoman and do everything yourself! The housework can wait and it is much more important to catch up on sleep and rest while you can. Why not hire a cleaner for the first few months or ask a friend or relative to help out. Except any offers of help or food!
‘Me’ time
It’s important to have time out for things you enjoy, even if it is just a walk around the block, a nice hot bath or a quiet cup of tea. You will feel refreshed and as they say ‘When Mum’s happy, everyone’s happy!
Get support
Find like-minded people that can help support and encourage you while you are breastfeeding. Mums are often the best source of advice and knowing that someone else is going through the same thing can be a big relief!
Remember do your best and try not to be too hard on yourself if things don’t go according to plan. Enjoy the early days with your new baby, because they really do go too fast.

Tips for Breastfeeding in Public
|
Date Added: 13/4/2007
|
|
Even though breastfeeding education has come along way many mums still feel uncomfortable about breastfeeding in public due to a perception that it is unacceptable. New mums can also feel a bit self-conscious about feeding in front of others and it is one of the reasons the women stop breastfeeding early.
However with a few tips and clever tricks, breastfeeding in public is possible and no longer a reason to feel stuck at home with your baby.
It’s a wrap
A large muslin wrap, shawl or baby blanket wrapped around your shoulder and back is an easy way to give you more privacy while breastfeeding. It’s easy, portable and will keep baby nice and cosy, especially in winter.
Breastfeeding Clothes
Breastfeeding clothes – also known as nursing wear – really have come a long way and are fantastic for discreet feeding in public. With clever built-in nursing access you can quickly latch baby on without anyone noticing or having your breasts on display. Breastfeeding tops today look like the latest fashion, so they help you to look and feel good as well.
Baby Slings and carriers
Many baby slings allow you to carry your baby and also breastfeed your baby at the same time without anyone even knowing. Make sure you wear clothing that allows you easy feeding access for your baby.
Nursing Rooms
Many large shopping centres and public places offer modern and comfortable parenting rooms that allow you to breastfeed your baby with privacy and a little quiet too. This can be great if you are a new mum and a bit self-conscious as a bit of space allows you to concentrate. Can also be handy if you have a toddler to manage as some have playpens to keep bigger brothers and sisters amused.
Plan ahead
If possible try to plan ahead and give a feed just before leaving on an outing or going shopping so you can limit the number of feeds while you are out.
As you can see with a bit of practise breastfeeding in public is possible and also convenient, as you don’t have to carry or heat up bottles. With more women breastfeeding in public it will also become more socially acceptable and viewed as a normal part of mothering.

Combining Work and Breastfeeding
|
Date Added: 28/2/2007
|
|
New mums returning to work in the first year of their baby’s life are often faced with the dilemma of combining breastfeeding and work. It is one of the most common reasons why women stop breastfeeding and make the switch to formula.
Although it can be a challenge, work and breastfeeding need not be mutually exclusive and with a few tips the transition back to work can be made easier.
Get pumping
It is worth investing in a quality electric breast pump particularly if you are returning to work on a full time basis. A good breast pump will allow you to quickly express enough milk for your baby and keep up your milk supply during missed feeds while working.
Be prepared
Make sure you start practising using the pump at least 2 weeks, ideally a month, before you return to work so you feel comfortable and get used to using it. You can then practise feeding your baby the expressed milk in a bottle or get Dad to help with feeds, so your baby gets used to taking feeds from someone else.
You may need to preserve with the bottle particularly if your baby is six months or older as they can refuse it to start with. I know when I returned to work when my youngest son Will was 7 months old, I switched straight to a cup as he refused a bottle.
Stock up
Start freezing and storing your expressed milk so you have a good supply built up for returning to work. Some people find it difficult to express large amounts of milk in one session, so it is important to start about a month before you return to work.
A good tip is to freeze milk in an ice cube tray (Tupperware ones are great with the lids) and then you have a ready supply to defrost so you don’t waste any!
You will soon have a good supply on hand when you express during missed feeds at work.
See the boss
It is a good idea to speak to your employer about your intentions to continue breastfeeding and express milk at work, as you will need a suitable area to breastfeed that is clean, private and hygienic. You can then negotiate a suitable arrangement for milk breaks and remember that there is legislation in place that protects you from discrimination.
You will also need a fridge to store your expressed breast milk or an appropriate freezer bag with icepacks. Remember to label your milk so it isn’t used in the morning coffee!
Dress for success
You will need to wear clothing that will allow you to express quickly and easily. This is where breastfeeding clothes are fantastic as they allow you to discreetly express at work. Many pieces such as nursing tanks can be easily combined with your existing wardrobe and look great under jackets. No one will ever know. Make sure you wear breast pads to stop any unsightly leaks! See our Fresh Mums and Top Secret designs, which are perfect for work.
Do your best
Try and persevere if you can because the benefits to you and your baby are worth it. But please remember you can only do your best and some women are unable to express large quantities of milk or lack support to do so. Remember you can use formula during work hours if necessary and then breastfeed as much as you can outside of work hours.

Planning the Perfect Maternity Wardrobe
|
Date Added: 8/2/2007
|
|

“I have nothing to wear!” Heard this before from a new mother?
After putting in much time and effort into planning their maternity wardrobe, many new mums suddenly discover they have nothing to wear after their baby arrives!
It is important to plan ahead while pregnant to ensure your maternity wardrobe will make the smooth transition from pregnancy to breastfeeding.
With a few simple tips planning the perfect maternity and breastfeeding wardrobe is easy and won’t break the budget either!
Start with the basics
Look at the basics in your pre-pregnancy wardrobe and replace these with the maternity versions. Maternity tanks tops with built-in nursing bras are fantastic and are easy to mix and match. Black, white and a print or brighter colour are great to start with and will go with most colours.
Tank tops will also take you through all seasons – perfect to wear on their own in the warmer months and great for layering in winter.
Think Dresses
Dresses in flowing stretchy fabrics are fantastic for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers. With the right cut, dresses are very flattering on a baby bump and also great for the post-baby figure.
Make sure you have at least one or two dresses in your wardrobe that will take you from work, play and important functions such as your baby’s christening or naming day! Again you can’t go past classic black for classic style and slimming effect.
New styles of maternity dresses also include a built-in nursing bra, which is fantastic when you have to attend a function and breastfeed your baby at the same time.
Tops to take you everywhere
Once you have a baby you suddenly need clothing for all those outings – mother’s group, coffee, shopping, trips to the doctor, the list goes on… Unless you want to spend your life in baby rooms, you need tops that allow you to breastfeed discreetly in public and look good too!
Again look for tops that allow for easy breastfeeding access and are flattering on your changing shape. Style features such as crossover fronts and side gathering are very good at hiding extra kilos. Many tops designed for breastfeeding are also suitable for pregnancy.
Look for quality
As a mum of two small boys, I know how tempting it is to go for cheap and cheerful when buying clothes. However, often these items are here for “a good time not a long time” and won’t last the distance.
When you think about it, your maternity and breastfeeding wardrobe needs to last you for at least two years depending on how long you breastfeed and how many children you have. So in the long run it is better value for money to look for quality fabrics and styles that will last the distance.
